THE REFUGEES

DIRECTOR’S STATEMENT

The greatest challenge for filmmakers today is to give audiences what they want, but in a fashion that they weren’t expecting.

Today’s film audiences are sophisticated in ways far beyond those of even a few decades ago. The advent of both entertainment programming and the Internet has given audiences a peek behind the stage curtain. As a result, it has become increasingly hard to shock or surprise audiences, resulting in a perceived lack of creativity at all levels of the filmmaking process.

Nowhere is this trend as evident as in genre films. The self-imposed limitations of genre, usually the source of inspiration, have locked too many films into a box of sameness, so much that even the slightest hint of originality is pounced upon by a hungry public.

This was my goal in writing “The Refugees.” I wanted to create a thriller with all of the standard elements of the genre, yet one that quickly dashes all expectations, so that at the end the audience still finds themselves wondering breathlessly, how will this all end.

I also strove to overcome the bane of all writers of genre stories – the lack of unique and interesting characters. In “The Refugees,” I hope and believe that I have created characters that will stand out from the crowd, because they are real, yet exist on the very edge of human experience.

In Drukker I feel I have created a unique film villain, one that is both menacing and sympathetic. If Darth Vader is the villain you love to hate, then Drukker will be the villain you hate to love. You know you should be rooting against him, yet at the same time you understand his desire to possess is merely an extension of his desire to be loved.

Jens and Adele provide two prototypes of modern tragic heroes. Jens is the everyman who buries his head in the sand, unwilling to face the ugly truth. This is increasingly a metaphor for out times. Adele is the opposite – increasingly aware of the ugliness around her, yet helpless to do anything to change things. This feeling is increasingly shared by today’s youth.

The conflicts that spring out of the interactions between these three characters are the reason that this script works for so many people and on so many levels.

In the final analysis, however, there is a singular reason I have for wanting to make this film. My dream has always been to make films that are, quite simply, fun. Audiences go to the movies for a combination of escapism, yet one that speaks to their daily lives. I believe that “The Refugees” is a fun, character-driven roller coaster ride, and a film that I would like to see myself. I am confident that I can both realize the film that I see in my head, and that, once made, this film will speak to a wide range of audiences and cultures.
